About a year ago I started learning Japanese. I already learned a few languages, so I hoped I would manage to get to a reasonable level in a few month. Turns out I didn’t! This language is extremely hard…
My least favorite part of any language is the grammar. For Japanese I’m tackling this using the Genki textbooks. The explanation of the grammar is great, but the exercises themselves are unfortunately best done in a class setting where you get direct feedback on your answers.
This is why I made tokidoki.meertens.dev. It’s a website with flashcards to practice your grammar! There is a section with grammar you learn per chapter (including the verbs you learn in those chapters), a section for adjective practice, and a section where you can practice your translation capabilities (both JPN->ENG and ENG->JPN).
Make sure to click the settings button as there are quite a few useful things you can configure! Do reach out if you use it and are missing something - I would love to add it.
As a sidenote: this is the first ‘vibe-coded’ app I made and launched! There are already a few websites where you can practice your grammar and find explanations, but I was not very satisfied with it. Instead whenever I missed something or wanted to try something I could directly update the website myself! This is why I made sure that the website is open source, so you can make your own additions as well. If you have something you like, make sure to open a pull request!
